You log on to Facebook to glance over your timeline, and before you know it, you've lost three hours. Well, don't beat yourself up! Even the most disciplined Facebook user can get caught in a time suck. The good news is that you can adjust your settings to use the website more efficiently by tailoring it to your needs, limiting your visibility, and reducing distractions. <h3 style="text-align: justify;">Tailoring Facebook to Your Needs</h3> Limit your network to connect only with family and friends. You'll have to use discipline to limit who you connect to, but you can control who sends you friend requests. Click the down arrow at the top right of your screen and choose “Settings.” Look for “Who can send you friend requests” and click “Edit.” Choose “Friends of Friends” from the drop-down menu. Create lists to selectively mute people. Go to “Explore” on the left-hand side of your timeline and click “Friends Lists.” Then, click “Create List.” Next, start entering the names of friends you want to add to the list. When you're finished, click “Create.” If you change your mind, you can always remove friends from the list. Increase your visibility for networking. This is the default setting for new Facebook accounts. However, if you need to increase your visibility, navigate back to your settings. Then, click “Edit” next to “Who can send you friend requests.” Finally, select “Everyone” from the drop-down list.   <h3 style="text-align: justify;">Limiting Your Visibility</h3> Control who can see your current posts. After you finish typing or uploading, go to the button next to “Post.” Its default setting is “Public.” To change this, click the button. Select “Friends” to limit your audience to your friends list. Choose “More options” to share only with groups, specific lists, or selected individuals. For truly private posts, select “Only Me” so that you're the only one who can see them. Facebook will save this setting for all future posts unless you change it. Limit the people who can search for you. Go to “Settings” and select “Privacy.” Then, find the heading “Who can look me up?” Under it, look for settings for your phone number and email address. Finally, select people from the drop-down list by each contact method. Choose from everyone, friends, and friends of friends. Disable chat. The chat feature is defaulted to alert your friends when you log in. To avoid being mobbed, first click the “Chat” box on the bottom right-hand side. Then, go to “Options.” From there, choose “Go Offline.” You can re-enable this feature whenever you like. Limit who can see your old posts. Click the down arrow at the top right of any page and select “Settings.” Then, enter your Privacy settings. Next, find the heading “Who can see my stuff?” Underneath it, click “Limit the audience for posts I've shared...” Finally, select “Limit Old Posts.” This feature won't allow you to control someone else's posts you've been tagged in.   <h3 style="text-align: justify;">Reducing Distractions</h3> Use lists to select whose timelines you see. Navigate to “Explore” and then click “Friends Lists.” Next, click the name of the list you want to follow. Facebook will show you only the feeds of the friends on that list. Ignore app invites. This will prevent your friends from inviting you to play a game or take a quiz. On the drop-down menu, look for “Privacy” and click it. Then, click “Manage Blocking.” Look for “Block app invites” and type each friend's name into the field labeled “Block invites from.” Select their name from the drop-down list. You can always unblock them by clicking “Unblock” next to their names. You can also ignore event requests from individual friends. Right below “Block app invites,” you'll find “Block event invites.” Enter each friend's name in the box and block their invites just as you did with apps. Disable all apps. Go to “Settings” at the top right of your screen. Then, select “Apps” from the menu that appears at the left. Look for “Apps, Websites, and Plugins,” which will be set to Enabled. Click “Edit.” You'll then see a box with the heading “Turn Platform Off.” Go down to the bottom right and click “Disable Platform.” This will prevent you from seeing games and quizzes in your timeline.   (WikiHow)
